To Play-Doh or To Cookie-Dough?

Updated: Feb 16, 2020

The other day I took the boys to Target to grab a few things. While there we passed the dreaded toy section and Sawyer decided to hop out of the cart and “just check some things out.” He was immediately drawn to the play-doh wall. I rarely let the boys play Play-Doh at home... or in Bowie’s case eat it. Anyway, after much negotiation and me feeling extra giving I let Sawyer buy the Camera Animal Adventure Play Dough set. It was $9.99 and on sale so I just didn’t get Starbucks.

When we got home we played with Play-Doh and after a I repeatedly told Bowie to stop eating the Play-Doh animal cookies and eventually gave up and let him just eat it and make a yuck-o face, Sawyer turned to me and said “Hey mom, let’s just make some real animal cookies!” So here we are...a few days later.

A few things:

  • No Play-Doh was actually used in this recipe we are just using the animal play-dough cutters as cookie cutters

  • This is such a quick recipe to put together. I made this after the kids went to bed so we could focus on rolling and cutting the next day and it took minutes.

  • Remember the timer because these cookies brown quick! Mine were slightly over done, I baked for about 15 mins because I forgot to put the timer on and then was chasing the Beasts around and got distracted.

Play-Dough Animal Sugar Cookies

For the Cookie:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for rolling

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature

  • 1cup granulated sugar

  • 1 large egg

  • 1-1/2 tsp vanilla extra

For the Icing:

  • 4 cups confectioners sugar

  • 5-8 Tbs of Water, added one Tbs at a time until the icing is a thick liquid

  • 1/2 tsp Vanilla Extract or any extract flavoring you want (optional)

  • Gel Food Coloring (optional)

* For these cookies we used play-doh like colors and just dipped them into the icing cookie by cookie.

  1. In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt.

  2. Cube butter an cream with butter and sugar until combined.

  3. Beat in egg and vanilla.

  4. With mixer on low, gradually add flour mixture until combined into a ball of dough. (It is a dry dough so keep the mixer going until it combines. It will combine).

  5. Mold dough into one or two balls, flatten into disks. Wrap in plastic; Refrigerate for 1 hr or freeze up to 3 months.

  6. Preheat oven to 325. Line baking sheet with parchment paper.

  7. Roll dough out to desired cookie thickness, I recommend between 1/8” - 1/4” and cut with desired cookie cutters and place cookies on baking sheets.

  8. Bake for 8-12 mins, depending on cookie thickness, until edges just start to darken but not brown.

  9. Once the cookies have completely cooled, Decorate and Enjoy!
